My Top Three Weight Release Tips

So when I was interviewed by FOX news there were many things I told them that did not make the clip. So I figured I’d circle back around and just reiterate what my top three things to keep in mind when trying to lower your weight and keep it that way….here goes.

1. Start drinking water. This will eliminate a good portion of your hunger, start pushing unhealthy beverages out of your diet, give you more energy if you’re dehydrated and make your entire body function better giving you a far better chance of recovery. Try 8 cups/day to start.

2. Get plenty of sleep. So many of us walk around sleep deprived. It is next to impossible to release weight long term if you’re not giving your body the down time it needs. Try 7-9 hours a day. Four…just won’t cut it.

3. Add don’t take away. Add healthy things, don’t worry about taking away the unhealthy when you start. Doing so can lead to deprivation which is what most diets really are and eventually your body will reject the radical change.

How To Eat An Elephant

It’s getting close to that time of year when many of our thoughts will be pointed towards losing weight, getting in shape and living a healthier existence. Yes, we all know we should be doing it already but somewhere between January 1st and December 31st we get off track…and on track…and off track…and on track…you get the idea. In fact if you’ve ever struggled with your weight, you painfully get the idea.
So the question comes to me with overwhelming frequency, “How to I stop this brain damaging cycle?” It’s absolutely mind numbing, I know, to start and stop and start and stop over and over again. I know because I lived this my entire life. Unfortunately, I spend the majority of this time not even getting up the momentum required to start, much less start over and over again. You see it takes a lot of courage and energy and momentum to get going on a diet and even more to keep it going long term and it wasn’t until I gave up even trying that the answer came to me…you might say by accident but I say by purpose.

6 Steps to Overcoming a Setback

“I’m going to be in bed for at least a couple days; this sucks.  Its a reminder of just how unpredictable life can be.  I have been doing everything perfect and I still get kicked in the….”

How do you get there from here?

The only step that ever counts is the next one.

So many times we find ourselves at a place where we just can’t see how we’ll ever get there from here. Sound familiar?

This is exactly how I felt when I set out to lose my excess weight.  The truth is I didn’t know how I was going to do it.  I only knew I had to get started and I had an idea as to what direction that should be in.

Many times if we look at the entire task of what needs to get done it can be very discouraging but if we can take it down in bite size pieces it’s a little easier to handle.  And though we may not always know the entire way to get to where we’re going at any given point, you only need to know where to place your next step. Remember the scenery always changes after each step and new opportunities will arise and new decisions will always be around to be made.  You don’t have to figure it all out at once. I always find that when I try to do that, it’s all too easy to get stuck in overwhelm and not do anything.

People so often ask me how I lost over 100lbs and I tell them I didn’t lose 100lbs. I don’t think I could have done that.  I let go of one pound…over one hundred times.

Top Ten Ways to get back on Track

Ok, so maybe you’ve slipped.  One day led to another and now here you are 3 weeks (or years) away from a time when you were really trying to do the right things and stay on track with your nutrition and exercise.  No worries.  Getting back in line is easy as pie (sorry).

1.  Make a list of 10 things you would do at your ideal weight and health.

Inspiration is a powerful motivator.  Always stay connected to your end desire.  As Stephen Covey says in Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, “Start with the end in mind.”

2.  Energize your exercise routine with a simple walk, forget the gym for now.

Don’t kill yourself at the gym.  This is the kind of self punishment that leads straight to a pint of Ben and Jerry’s.  Just walk…keep on walking.  You can do this.  Start slow.

3.  Add one fruit to your daily intake.

An apple a day can go a long way to eliminating some unnecessary snacking as well as bring some needed fiber and nutrients to your digestive track which is begging for mercy.

4.  Have a conversation with at least one person you know who is always encouraging.

Come on!  I’m sure you know someone.

5. Keep healthy foods out in plain view and put the less than healthy away.

If we think about food every time we see it, we might as well stack the deck in our favor…let’s look at more of the good stuff and less of the bad.

6.  Keep a log of everything you are eating and drinking.

“Oh…I only ate 12oo calories yesterday.”….before 8pm.  You bite it, you write it.  Mindful eating starts with honesty with yourself.  This does not mean self imposed guilt…it means honesty!

7.  Spend 5 minutes every day visualizing what you will look like at your ideal body weight and health.

Use your imagination.  Having trouble with this one?  Pick a model and paste your head on their picture..just kidding, but seriously, not really but you could.

8.  Don’t beat yourself up for something you may have done “wrong”.

All is fair in love and war.  Hopefully this is more about love than war.  In any event, mistakes are our learning grounds for improvement.  Be grateful for them, just don’t use this as an excuse to eat that whole batch of brownies in the name of self improvement.

9. Drink plenty of water.

You already know this one but it never hurts to be reminded.  Seriously, probably the single most important thing you can do for yourself.

10.  Remember you never can fail unless your dead….heart still beating?  Then you still have a chance to succeed.

Stay positive, stay grateful.  If you made it this far, you’re still alive…hell, even Jerry Garcia was grateful in death.
