Interesting where we place our excess weight not only as people but as a country. I wonder if we made another map of where the best tasting food comes from if it would coincide.
So the situation seems to be sliding out of control like Mel Gibson at a toga party but what can we do about it?
Now most of you know I am passionate about the subject of childhood obesity and I have received thousands of emails over the past several months and some really good ideas about how we can reverse childhood obesity.
Here’s what one of you suggested.
“Hold our children and their parents responsible for their level of physical fitness and health. Grade them like you would grade them on their math skills. If they pass, good. If they don’t, put them in a special needs program and focus on solutions for them. I’m not saying punish them or degrade them, I’m saying acknowledge the problem and deal with it. It’s that serious and it’s probably more important than their math score anyway, not to mention what it is costing us as a nation. This is what we do when they don’t make the grade in other subjects. It’s time to look this problem square in the eyes and face it.”
Where is Larry King when you need him? Piers Morgan, care to take a swing at this one? I’m available for debate.
Why don’t some of you weigh in on the topic.
Should we grade our kids on their health? Can we?
Talk to me and then pass it around. Is fast food and poor parenting really to blame? Could there be other reasons for our children’s obesity?
